WebThe sinoatrial node (SAN) is a specialized muscle in the right atrial wall near the opening of the superior vena cava. The electrical impulse initiates in the SAN pacemaker cells. Age decreases the number of pacemaker cells, but increases fat infiltration and collagen deposition, contributing to SAN impulse exit block.
